Cala Luna
Saturday, August 31, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

Lime & Tonic provided a 'Five Fresh Courses w/ Five Paired Wines' deal at Cala Luna for only $55!
Sounds like a steal no? :D

The experience, though, was only so-so.
There were definitely some highs and some lows.

Service

Service wasn't as good as expected :(

The waiter we were assigned did not care to explain what was on the plate.
I feel that any restaurant that serves beyond 3 courses should give an explanation for each and every course.

The information about the paired wines were also in the dark.
In comparison, the waiter in Bishop Sessa explained why each wine was paired with each course.
Therefore, we can learn to appreciate and think about how the flavours of the wine and the dish would match.
It just makes eating really fun :)

Cala Luna on the other hand simply placed the wines on our table with no explanations whatsoever :(

Another misconception was that the website provided a sample degustation menu,
& At the bottom it states that:

"This menu will vary on a daily basis to reflect the freshest produce seasonally available. However the menu will always contain soup, salad, pasta, fish, beef, and dessert"

We did not get a soup nor a salad,
We got a tiny little scallop instead of a fish dish,
&
We got pork instead of beef (which was fine actually)
Ugh.

Okay enough complaints about the service, on to the food!

Food

Italian Olives & Aged Parmesan Cheese

I was quite surprised that this was considered a course.
Hmm.

Seared Scallop w/ peas and ???

I was also surprised that this was considered as a course.
Don't be deceived by the photo, the scallop is actually really small.
However, it was one tasty scallop!
It was aggressively seasoned with salt, which I like :D

Tortellini with ...
I think it was salmon inside,
& I have no idea what puree that was made of -_-

Uh.......................
Yeah, tasted like salmon wrapped in pasta.
That's all I have to say.

Stuffed Suckling Pig w/ grilled figs & pumpkin

This was the highlight of the meal!
I absolutely looooooooooooooooved this.
Oh my god,
The pork was so tender,
The stuffing really made the pork quite aromatic,
The skin was definitely crackling,
& The flavours of grilled figs and pumpkin just went so well with the pork.
High praise on this one!

Random Dessert Platter

Now how can you put out such a sophisticated main and put out such a crappy dessert? :(
It was so dissapointing.
None of the components on that plate impressed me.

Ice cream was tasteless,
Strawberry was bland,
That yellow crunchy thingy was also bland.
Ugh, everything just did not go well together.

Conclusion

At the end, we still left happy. Why?
The main was satisfying (thank god), and the entire meal only costed $55.
If the price that we had to pay was double, it would definitely not be worth it.

On the plus side, scenery was just amazingly beautiful!
It was my first time at Mosman and it won't be my last.
The restaurant is facing the yacht bay.
So the setting was just perfect on a friday afternoon :)
Fin.

Mad Spuds
Wednesday, August 28, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

If there's one cafe you have to go in Surry Hills, it's Mad Spuds.
Simply because the concept of their restaurant stands out.
They specialise in serving potato based dishes!

Littly Piggy
Baked Potatoes w/ crispy bacon strips, mozzarella, brie, feta, and sour scream w/ a seven seed slaw ($15)

I opted for their little piggy because I felt like having some bacon that day :)
It was........................ Okay.
It's just bacon served on potatoes really.
But it is a potato dish that's turned up a notch.
It sure is commendable because they managed to glamorize something as simple as a potato.

Something else I would recommend to order?
It would be their Mad Spud Stack.
I've seen pictures of it and it looks awesome.
(I might go back just to try it)

Mad spuds is quite unique.
I don't think there's anywhere else in Sydney that does this.

If you're the type of person that just loves your potatoes,
Or maybe you're just keen on trying a potato-concept cafe,
Mad Spuds is the place to be!

Copo Cafe & Diner
Saturday, August 24, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

It was a warm & sunny day.
And a warm sunny day would be the perfect weather to go to Copo Cafe & Diner!

The service was great.
We came in a group of 8 and they did their very best to accommodate us.

Copo Cafe is made of two floors.
I do recommend you to go upstairs!
It's an open air / shaded area.
So you get will a little bit of that sunshine and breeze :D (if there is any).

Most of us ordered different things.
They serve a lot of dishes that has interesting concepts.

Baked Eggs w/ fried potato, chorizo, chimchurri & toast ($17.90)

House Smoked Trout Baked Eggs w/ creme fraiche, herbs & toast ($17.90)

My dish was disappointing :(
The entire dish was overcooked.
I had like two whole solid pieces of egg yolks,
& the ocean trout just way too dry and hard.
Maybe I was just unlucky?

However, the concept is definitely there.
If it was done properly, it would have tasted amazing!

The overall experience was not too bad.
Dining on a rooftop with great weather was actually quite enjoyable :)

Chur Burger
Friday, August 23, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

If you search Chur Burger on the internet, this pops up

'CHUR Burger - Voted the best burgers in Sydney... and Surry Hills'

I was very sceptical at first.
I've never tasted an amazing burger before.
So I went there with the low expectations.
Can Chur Burger really wow me?

... and the answer is YES!

Marinated Grilled Chicken Burger w/ hot sauce mayo, minted slaw ($10)

THIS, is one delicious burger.
I kept nodding my head to my friend as I started to devour it.
I believe that's a natural sign to indicate that something's good :P

The grilled chicken was surprisingly really tasty.
The marinated-grilled flavour really comes through and its just really well cooked.
On top of that, the ratio of chicken to slaw was perfect.

There was also that tiny little hint of mint which was also very interesting and refreshing.
Furthermore, Chur Burger provides a small range of mexican hot sauces to go with your burger.
Which I do recommend to add if you can take your spice.

Sweet Potato Fries w/ garlic and lime ($5)

I ordered this due to curiosity. I don't think anywhere else does this.
The verdict:
It's good! But I think it's good just by itself.
Not with the burger.
Regular chips would definitely be a better pairing with their burgers.

I was looking around while I was eating,
And there seemed to be a lot of people ordering beer too.

So, when you go to Chur Burger,
I think this would be an ideal order:
A kick-ass burger of your choice + side of chili salted chips + mexican hot sauces + a cold beer.

Yum!
