Paramount Coffee Project
Monday, December 9, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

Popular for their one-of-a-kind soft shell crab burger,
Paramount Coffee Project is definitely a place that's currently buzzing among sydneysiders.

The building where the cafe resides used to be a paramount studio, hence its name.
Definitely an interesting concept converting a empty studio space into a cafe.
Due to having such a large space, their seating areas are split into a few places.

Crab Po Boy: soft shell crab, house slaw, ranch dressing, milk bun ($18)

For first timers, it's a must to try their soft shell crab!
Yums!
Though, I found it to be a little hard to eat since it's not a solid piece of round shaped 'meat'.
My crab and lettuce fell all over the place.
But its all good fun :P

Cajun Blackened Fish: creole potato salad, charred lime ($17)

I returned a second time and my friend told me that their cajun fish is pretty good.
So I ordered it,
And I can confirm, it is pretty good :D
Their flavouring was spot on, I just wish there was more fish!

Peanut Butter & Jelly Milkshake ($8)

One last thing. Order this.
There's 2 milkshakes that I rave about in Sydney.
One is In The Annex's Nutella Milkshake,
and the second is this PB&J Milkshake.
Yums!

Brooklyn Hide
Wednesday, September 25, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

Yet another new cafe popped up in Surry Hills - Brooklyn Hide.
& It's a bagel shop! Oooooooooooh.
I've never tried bagels before, so this was pretty exciting :D

They have several types of bagels on their menu (Sourdough Rye, Poppy Seed, Blueberrye etc.)
You could spread it, or you could go further with adding a meat of your choice! (like chicken or pork)

'Brooklyn Hide is as New York as it gets'

Brooklyn Hide - Braised pork, fresh cucumber & apple jam w/ poppy seed bagel ($10)

I went for the braised pork!
I've tasted some amazing braised/pulled pork in sydney, and I was expecting the same with this choice.
Unfortunately it was dissapointing.
Sighpies :(

The pork was quite tough and dry.
The whole thing could have seriously been amazing if the pork was tender and soft.
Cause the idea is there!

I tried the bagel just by itself, and it actually tasted nice!
It had this fragrance to the bread that just leaves you wanting more.

Brooklyn Breakfast - Fresh corn, prosciutto, tomato & capsicum w/ oregano bagel ($?)

I thought this was SO cute.
Smallest breakfast pan I've ever seen.
Though, I didn't actually order this, my friend did :P

Midtown - Corned beef, gruyere, sauerkraut, mustard mayonnaise w/ 'abit of everyhing' bagel ($10)

A few of my friends also ordered this, and they seem to like it!

Overall, the Brooklyn Hide 'experience' was pretty good.
I really really like their bagels.
I might actually go back just to have a snack - a simple bagel w/ spread.
But their lunch bagels are nothing to rave about.

I can't believe bagels are not a common thing here.
Come on Sydney! More!

Meadow Cafe
Saturday, September 21, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

A friend has been bugging me go bring her to Meadow Cafe quite a while now.
The reason why she was attracted to this place is that they have umbrella tables!
It's like a outdoor cafe concept.
Except. On the day we went, it was drizzling :/
Boo.
Nevertheless! Was still keen to try it out.
Seen some facebook photos and they seem to be quite creative with their dishes.

The cafe is located at Prince Alfred Park, right next to city.
It's also located right next to a pool!

We opted for both their breakfast & lunch menu.
We arrived at 11:40am,
So we ordered 2 dishes from the breakfast menu, and 2 dishes from the lunch menu.
I didn't take a photo of the breakkie menu, so I has to just guess the name of the dishes :l (soz!)
* Lunch starts from 12pm onwards.

I'm just going to post photos and give a brief description of each dish at the end.
None of the dishes were complex enough for me to write enough review.

Baked Eggs w/ toast

Black(?) Bean Sticky Rice w/ bananas, milk and passionfruit

Meadow Burger w/ gruyere, crispy speck, tomato, lettuce, mustard, pickle & chips ($18)

Seared Ocean Trout w/ chermoula crust, lemon zest, spiced eggplant & mint salad ($25)

Baked eggs was pretty good!
Sticky rice was very interesting, with that passionfruit topping.
Meadow Burger was baaaaaaad. Oh no. The meat was just so tough :/
Seared Ocean Trout was by far the best dish! It had that indian spiced flavours infused into the dish, which was very nice. Yums!

Considering that the style of the cafe is meant to be a place to grab a bite after swim,
I'm impressed!
Meadow Cafe doesn't serve dishes that has that wow factor, but it's somewhat good enough.

Burnt Orange
Sunday, September 8, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

My friend requested me to bring him to Burnt Orange for his 'birthday brunch'
Burnt Orange is located in Mosman.
I'm always down for any cafe that's located in Mosman :D

The place was incredibly beautiful!
Argh, I regretted not taking any photos of the cafe itself.

There are a few tables that overlooks the river, and the view is just incredible.
Having brunch with this view, on a sunny day, is just perfect :)

Eggs Benedict: Poached eggs on toasted brioche & hollandaise sauce w/ Tasmanian smoked salmon ($18)

I opted for their eggs benedict cause I wanted something light and gentle on the tummy.
& I can say that dish was pretty well executed!
I especially loved that they used a brioche instead of regular toast.
The brioche was soft enough that I could just slice my knife through the whole thing. Yum!

Breakfast Bruschetta: Vine tomato & avocado salsa with smoked bacon and poached egg on grilled sourdough ($18)

Buttermilk pancakes w/ double smoked bacon and maple syrup ($15)

Had a taste of my friend's pancakes.
It was my first time trying bacon with pancakes.
I was pleasantly surprised that it does actually go well together!
You could really taste both it's sweet & savoury-ness when eating this dish.

The bacon was cooked really nicely.
It was also soft enough for you to just slice it through with ease. Mmm.

And of course, a meal is always incomplete without some dessert :)

Banoffee Pie w/ maple roasted pecans, dulce de leche and shaved chocolate ($13)
vs
Rhubarb and Custard Crumble w/ vanilla bean ice cream ($12)

High praise on their Banoffee pie!
Every component came together really well.
There was also a small layer of bananas at the bottom which just tasted delightful.

Burnt Orange represents everything a cafe should be.
Great location, great atmosphere, great service & great food!

Kepos Street Kitchen
Thursday, August 22, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

Kepos Street Kitchen is this little cafe located in Redfern.
The dish that caught my attention was their Shakshuka!

Shakshuka is a Tunisian dish made of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, chili peppers, onions & cumin.
Never tried this before, so I was really keen on trying it for the first time.

Soft Baked Eggs & Tomato Shakshuka w/ coriander tahini & sourdough ($15)

The verdict? It's pretty good.
Though it didn't wow me, it was certainly worth trying.
You can definitely taste flavours from the middle east in that bowl.
Also, it's quite a light dish as there wasn't any form of meat.

Other than the shakshuka, my friend and I also ordered their squid ink risotto to share.

Squid Ink Risotto w/ sautéed cuttlefish, tomato and zhoug ($23)

This was quite yummy!
I always love a good squid ink risotto :D
However, the issue that I had is that the portion is just way too little.
And I'm considered to be a small eater!
For the price tag of $23 in a brunch cafe, I would expect to be served something that would make me full.

That being said, hats off for serving it in a pan :)
I know it's just a minor thing,
But it's little touches like this that makes the dining experience so much more interesting.

Give Kepos Street Kitchen a try.
They do not have one single speciality,
So do try ordering something different from their menu,
And you just might be pleasantly surprised :)

Revolver
Wednesday, August 21, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

There's a handful of hidden cafes that's sitting directly in the middle of the residential part of a suburb,
& They manage to do very well despite not being located at a cafe hotspot like Surry Hills.

Revolver, hidden in Annandale, is one of them.

Revolver Big Breakie
Two eggs baked in their housemade beans, honey cured bacon, roast tomato, mushrooms, pork fennel sausage & toast ($16.5)

I really adore cafes that serves their breakfast on a pan.
Just looking at the presentation of this big brekkie makes me a happy person :)

Every component was cooked quite well.
It's not rocket science really.
You have your basic breakfast ingredients; eggs, bacon, tomato and a sausage served w/ a piece of toast.
It's a simple, and yet a very tasty breakfast.

I've been to revolver twice, and I must say that their quality did drop a little the second time around.
However, I still do think it's worth a trip down if you haven't been to revolver.

Recommended.

In The Annex
Tuesday, August 20, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

I absolutely love cafes that goes beyond serving common breakfast items.
In The Annex is one of those cafes that shows careful thought & creativity in their dishes.

Beef 2 Ways (pulled & cured)  w/ artichoke, mushrooms and a sunny side up egg ($18)

Look at this! It's like artwork on a plate :)

The dish itself was wildly flavourful.
Especially when you include every component into one bite.
My only criticism would be the type of bread that they used is too heavy (flavour-wise).
Still! I would recommend ordering this if it will be your first time here.

Nutella Milkshake w/ a Where's Wally straw ($8)

I have to admit that,
I absolutely loved their straw :D LOL.
That being said, their nutella milkshake is pretty darn good!
If you're one of those people who just LOVES nutella (and I do know that a lot of people do).
This is the milkshake for you.

If I'm not mistaken, their menu changes weekly (or seasonally),
Depending on what fresh ingredients that manage to obtain during that time period.

If you're feeling adventurous and you want to try something out of the box for brunch.
Visit In The Annex!

West Julliet
Sunday, August 18, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

I've been to West Julliet once, and I will return.
Why? Because of this.

Pink Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie!

I've never tasted a cookie so yummy in my life.
If you visit West Julliet, you HAVE to try this cookie.
It will change your life.
Okay maybe not.
But this is definitely one hell of a cookie.

As for the cafe,
The setting in West Julliet is very cosy.
It's indoor, & it's quite large with high ceilings (if my memory serves me right).
It's just those kind of cafe where you could chill all day long.
I spent all afternoon catching up with a friend :)

Breakfast Plate - Poached egg, avocado, leg ham, tomato, provolone cheese and grilled mushrooms

There's nothing to rave about their breakfast plate.
It's simply a combo of fresh ingredients on a plate that's presented quite well.

If you have an old friend that you want to catch up with & u're looking for a cafe with good atmosphere?
Go to West Julliet.

If you want to try a bad-ass cookie?
Go to West Julliet.

Recommended.

Chalkboard Cafe
Wednesday, August 14, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

Visited the brand new Chalkboard Cafe in Waterloo!
They serve this dish called the Breakfast Tasting Plate ($20)
Which is completely unheard of.
But I seriously wonder why no one else have come up with this yet!
It's pure genius.
Hopefully more breakfast degustations will pop up :D

Granola with poached fruit, berries and vanilla yoghurt.
Chalkboard Benedict with bacon poached eggs, potato cage and chive hollandaise.
Blueberry and Buttermilk Pancake with blueberry compote and vanilla cream.

One of the best breakkie ever!
It's so great because you have both sweet and savoury on the same plate.
I started off with the poached eggs and bacon, which was excellent btw.

Then, I moved on to the pancakes.
I must say that this was the highlight of the entire dish.
The amount of pancakes was just enough and their blueberry compote tasted amazing!
Along with their maple syrup and vanilla cream,
Their pancakes really did win me over.

Finally, I finished the meal off with the granola & fruits for a light and refreshing end to my breakfast :)

-

There was a slight complication with our coffee and it took quite a while to arrive.
So, the waiter was so kind enough to take the coffee off the bill.
Hats off to Chalkboard Cafe.

Highly recommended!

Devon Cafe
Monday, August 12, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 2 footsteps ♠

Visited Devon Cafe for brunch on friday!
I experienced devouring a life changing Toastie :O

Ultimate Toastie w/ Black Truffles, Grilled Mushrooms, Fried Eggs & Fontina Cheese ($25)

This is by far one of the best toasties I've had.
The mushrooms are gorgeous!
They even had enoki mushrooms! Which is one of my all time favourite mushrooms.
Though, I would have preferred to have less cheese, but that's just a personal preference.

It was my first time having truffles, and I must say that it's quite mild.
But it does help elevate the entire dish.
Overall, it tastes amazing.

PS. This dish is only available during truffle season!
Which ends at the end of august.
Highly recommended to try ASAP.

Homemade Pasta w/ Spanner Crab, Cherry Tomato & Garlic

Pasta was very light and refreshing.
However, I could not taste any of that wonderful crab flavour.

Dragonwell Tea

I really wanted to try their popular 'breakfast dessert' called Little Lost Brioche.
But unfortunately they stop serving it after 11:30am :(
I will definitely return just to try that brioche!

Excelsior Jones
Wednesday, July 31, 2013 | Posted by CalvinTCQ ♣ | 0 footsteps ♠

First food destination crossed off! :)
I guess I'll write a little review of the cafes/restaurants I explore :P

Visited the almighty Excelsior Jones.
TimeOut Magazine voted this cafe as the Cafe of the Year 2013.
So yeah I def wanted to give this a try.

Pork Hock w/ Pearl Shallots, Fried Buckwheat, Poached Egg & Fresh Herbs ($16)

This is not your ordinary kind of cafe that serves a 'big breakfast'.
They have a very limited/small menu, which is fine for specializing.
But this dish, Pork Hock, along with their Cheeseburger, are their most talked about dish.

So, I decided to order the Pork Hock!
I found this dish to be very under-seasoned :(
I had to constantly put additional salt and pepper to keep up with the flavours.
I'm not sure if it's intentional, cause potato dishes are meant to be 'healthy' (?)
But there are elements of this dish that made it quite yummy (WITH the extra salt and pepper that is)
The herbs that complemented the pork and potatoes were yum!

As for the atmosphere, it's not the best setting to chill in.
I felt like the cafe is quite confined. I like cafes with large spaces.
I think so far, West Julliet has the best atmosphere to just chill all day.

Judging from this dish alone, along with the atmosphere,
I rate Excelsior Jones 6.5/10.
I MAY go back in the future to try their cheeseburger. But that might be quite a long way down the road.
